Adrian Frederick Smith (born 27 February 1957) is an English musician, songwriter, and author best known as one of the three guitarists in the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He's held that position for most of the group's existence. Smith first joined Iron Maiden in 1980 and played on albums that turned the band into one of heavy metal's most successful and longest-lasting acts. He left in 1990, came back in 1999, and has been a core member ever since. Beyond Iron Maiden, Smith's pursued various musical side projects, including a collaboration with guitarist and vocalist Richie Kotzen called Smith/Kotzen. They've toured and recorded together, exploring sounds beyond heavy metal. Smith published a memoir, too, and he's been vocal about issues affecting the music industry, particularly artificial intelligence in music creation. His songwriting credits include some of Iron Maiden's best-known tracks, and his guitar work has shaped the band's sound across multiple decades.

Early Life

Adrian Frederick Smith was born in 1957 in Hackney, in London's East End. He grew up in Clapton during a time when British music was transforming rapidly. Progressive rock, glam rock, then punk and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) all emerged during his teenage years. Young Adrian caught the guitar bug early and never let go.

He joined London's burgeoning rock and metal scene as a teenager, forming and playing in several bands. Those years taught him the craft of performance and songwriting. During this time, he met musicians who'd become part of Iron Maiden and shape British heavy metal for decades. His early influences ranged across hard rock and blues-based guitar traditions. That foundation shaped his later style: melodic but technically demanding.

Before Iron Maiden, Smith played in a band called Urchin. They were part of the same late-1970s NWOBHM circuit as Iron Maiden and plenty of other bands trying to make it in London clubs. Urchin got decent recognition locally and released recordings that showed Smith's growing skills on guitar and as a songwriter. The bands operated in overlapping circles, so Iron Maiden founder Steve Harris knew Smith's work. When Iron Maiden needed a new guitarist, Smith was already on the map.

Career

Iron Maiden: First Tenure (1980–1990)

Smith joined Iron Maiden in 1980, taking Dennis Stratton's place. The timing was perfect. The band was exploding from an East London club act into an international heavy metal force. His first album was Killers (1981), which had a more refined and aggressive guitar sound than the self-titled debut. Smith and Dave Murray developed a twin-guitar harmony style that became one of Iron Maiden's signatures.

Commercial breakthrough came with The Number of the Beast (1982), which also brought Bruce Dickinson into the fold as vocalist. Dickinson's range combined with the Smith-Murray guitar partnership was unstoppable. Smith worked as both performer and songwriter, co-writing tracks that became central to Iron Maiden's live shows and identity.

The 1980s saw Smith involved in creating albums now considered among heavy metal's most important: Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Somewhere in Time (1986), and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988). His songwriting during this stretch showed real diversity. "Wasted Years" from Somewhere in Time displayed his melodic touch and his talent for crafting guitar-driven songs that were both technically impressive and accessible. "Stranger in a Strange Land" showed similar qualities. "Wasted Years" stayed in the band's live setlists for decades and became a staple of Smith's side projects too.[1]

The late 1980s brought creative tensions as the band experimented with progressive arrangements and synthesizers. Smith left in 1990 after the No Prayer for the Dying sessions wrapped. The exact reasons have been debated from different angles over the years. Janick Gers replaced him.

Post-Iron Maiden Projects (1990–1999)

After leaving Iron Maiden, Smith explored other musical paths. He formed ASAP (Adrian Smith and Project), which released Silver and Gold in 1989, just before he officially exited Iron Maiden. The project revealed a different side of his musical personality. It leaned toward melodic rock and AOR (album-oriented rock), a departure from Iron Maiden's heavier sound.

During the 1990s, Smith also formed Psycho Motel. The band released two albums: State of Mind (1996) and Welcome to the World (1997). These ventures let him explore songwriting and performance styles outside Iron Maiden's established framework. Neither ASAP nor Psycho Motel matched Iron Maiden's commercial success. Still, they proved Smith was versatile and committed to making music on his own terms.

Return to Iron Maiden (1999–Present)

In 1999, Smith rejoined Iron Maiden in a reunion that also brought back Bruce Dickinson. Rather than replace Janick Gers, the band expanded to three guitars. Smith, Gers, and Dave Murray created a lineup that's stayed intact since. The reunion included Brave New World (2000), which felt like the band finding their creative footing again. Smith contributed significantly to the songwriting.

The reunited lineup released Dance of Death (2003), A Matter of Life and Death (2006), The Final Frontier (2010), The Book of Souls (2015), and Senjutsu (2021). Smith's been an active songwriter on every album. Three guitars allowed Iron Maiden to play their huge catalog with greater accuracy to the studio recordings and added harmonic and melodic depth to live shows.

Iron Maiden toured relentlessly during this period, hitting stadiums and arenas worldwide, often flying on their customized Boeing 747, "Ed Force One," piloted by Dickinson himself. Smith's role remained consistent: guitarist, backing vocalist, co-songwriter.

Smith/Kotzen

Smith also pursued a collaboration with American guitarist and vocalist Richie Kotzen, formerly of Poison and Mr. Big. As Smith/Kotzen, they released a self-titled debut album in 2021 and toured afterward.

Smith/Kotzen blends hard rock, blues, and melodic rock influences from both musicians' backgrounds. The duo performs original material alongside songs from their respective catalogs. At a London gig in February 2026, they performed the Iron Maiden classic "Wasted Years" with a special guest: Bruce Dickinson joined them onstage.[2][3] That performance became a standout moment in their live shows. "Wasted Years" consistently ranks among their best-received songs onstage.[4]

Views on Artificial Intelligence in Music

In February 2026, Smith spoke publicly about AI in music creation during an interview with Argentina's UnDinamo - La Última Radio De Rock. He criticized the trend, saying that "people seem to be craving more reward with less effort." His concern: what does AI-generated music mean for artists and the creative process?[5] His remarks touched on larger debates happening across the music industry: technology's role in creative production, intellectual property protection for musicians, and whether human artistry still matters in an increasingly automated culture.

Personal Life

Smith's kept his personal life largely private. He's lived in both England and the United States at different points in his career. Beyond music, he's an avid fisherman, a passion he's discussed openly in interviews. That hobby actually led to a memoir: Monsters of River and Rock: My Life as Iron Maiden's Compulsive Angler. It blended reflections on his music career with tales of fishing adventures around the globe. The book offered a candid, humorous look at Smith's life off the stage.

He's also known for staying physically fit and has emphasized the importance of health and discipline in sustaining a career built on extensive touring and live performance across multiple decades.

Legacy

Adrian Smith's been active in heavy metal for over four decades as a performer, recording artist, and songwriter. As an Iron Maiden member, he's part of a band that's sold more than 100 million records worldwide and played thousands of concerts across every inhabited continent. His guitar work stands out: melodic phrasing, precise technique, and a distinctive tone that's defined the Iron Maiden sound, especially in their twin and triple-guitar harmonies.

His songwriting produced some of Iron Maiden's most lasting compositions. "Wasted Years," entirely his creation, remains one of the band's most frequently performed and recognizable songs. It shows up in Iron Maiden's setlists and Smith's side projects alike.[4] His knack for balancing commercial appeal with musical sophistication has been consistent throughout his contributions to the band's catalog.

Beyond Iron Maiden, Smith's explored different musical territory through ASAP, Psycho Motel, and Smith/Kotzen. Those projects revealed genuine breadth in his musical interests, extending well beyond a single genre. His work with Richie Kotzen demonstrated continued creative ambition later in his career.

Smith's public commentary on issues like artificial intelligence in music reflects his ongoing engagement with the music industry's evolution and his belief in the value of human creativity in art.[6]
