Daniel Philip Meuser (born February 10, 1964) is an American businessman and politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Pennsylvania's 9th congressional district since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, Meuser built a career in the healthcare manufacturing industry before entering public service, serving as president of the Pride Mobility Products Corporation, a manufacturer of motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters based in the Wilkes-Barre–Scranton metropolitan area of northeastern Pennsylvania. His transition to government came when he was appointed Secretary of Revenue of Pennsylvania by Governor Tom Corbett, a position he held from 2011 to 2015. Meuser won election to Congress in 2018 and has since served multiple terms representing a large swath of central and northeastern Pennsylvania. In the 119th Congress, Meuser serves as chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, where he has led hearings on public housing authority oversight, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and fraud prevention.[1][2]

Early Life

Daniel Philip Meuser was born on February 10, 1964, in New York City, New York.[3] Details about his parents and upbringing in the public record are limited, though Meuser would go on to build his professional life in the northeastern Pennsylvania region, where he established deep roots in business and community affairs.

Meuser attended the State University of New York Maritime College before transferring to and graduating from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree.[3] His education provided a foundation for a career that would span business leadership in the healthcare products industry and, later, public service at both the state and federal levels.

Education

Meuser initially enrolled at the State University of New York Maritime College, one of the six state-operated colleges in the State University of New York system. He subsequently attended Cornell University, located in Ithaca, New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.[3] Cornell, a member of the Ivy League, is known for its programs in business, public policy, and the liberal arts. Meuser's educational background at these two New York institutions preceded his relocation to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area of Pennsylvania, where he would spend the bulk of his professional career.

Career

Business Career at Pride Mobility Products

Before entering politics, Meuser spent much of his professional career in the healthcare manufacturing industry. He rose to the position of president of the Pride Mobility Products Corporation (also known as Pride Corporation), a company based in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton metropolitan area of Pennsylvania that manufactures motorized wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and related products for individuals with disabilities.[4][5] Pride Mobility Products is one of the larger employers in the region and a significant player in the durable medical equipment industry.

During his tenure at Pride, Meuser was involved in advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities and testified before Congress regarding federal practices surrounding the rights of and care for disabled individuals.[4] His work in the mobility products industry gave him firsthand experience with federal healthcare regulations, Medicare reimbursement policies, and the challenges faced by manufacturers of assistive technology devices.

Meuser eventually departed his role as president of Pride Mobility Products.[6] He continued to serve the company in an advisory capacity as a board member and consultant. His business career established him as a prominent figure in northeastern Pennsylvania's business community, and he was recognized among influential figures in Pennsylvania politics and business circles.[7]

During the period leading up to his first run for public office, Meuser's business background also came under scrutiny. Reports emerged regarding a fine related to the employment of undocumented workers at one of his properties, though Meuser stated that records pertaining to the matter were no longer available.[8] Questions were also raised regarding Meuser's housing arrangements during a prior campaign.[9]

Pennsylvania Secretary of Revenue

In January 2011, Meuser was appointed Secretary of Revenue of Pennsylvania by newly inaugurated Republican Governor Tom Corbett.[10] He succeeded Daniel Hassell, who had served in an acting capacity. Reports at the time noted that Meuser and his family had been significant donors to Corbett's gubernatorial campaign.[10]

As Secretary of Revenue, Meuser oversaw the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, which is responsible for the administration and collection of state taxes, including income, sales, corporate, and inheritance taxes. The department plays a central role in the fiscal operations of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

During his tenure, the Department of Revenue undertook various actions and initiatives related to tax administration and enforcement. PennLive reported on the department's activities under Meuser's leadership in 2011.[11] Meuser also became involved with the Council on State Taxation (COST) during this period, engaging with national discussions on state tax policy.[12]

Meuser served as Secretary of Revenue for the entirety of the Corbett administration, from January 18, 2011, until January 20, 2015. He was succeeded by Eileen McNulty, who was appointed by incoming Governor Tom Wolf.

2008 Congressional Campaign

Meuser first sought elected office in 2008, when he ran for the Republican nomination in Pennsylvania's 10th congressional district. The race drew attention in the northeastern Pennsylvania political landscape, with coverage in regional outlets such as the Times Leader.[13] Meuser ultimately did not prevail in the 2008 primary, but the campaign raised his profile in Republican politics in the region and foreshadowed his eventual successful bid a decade later.

2018 Congressional Campaign

In 2018, Meuser ran for the Republican nomination in Pennsylvania's 9th congressional district, a newly redrawn district that encompassed a large portion of central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The seat was open due to the redistricting of Pennsylvania's congressional map by the state Supreme Court, which eliminated the previous 11th district held by Republican Lou Barletta, who was running for the U.S. Senate.

Meuser secured endorsements from a number of local Republican organizations during the primary campaign. The Lebanon County Republican Committee endorsed Meuser for the 9th district seat.[14] The Columbia County Republican Committee also endorsed his candidacy.[15] Republican municipal officials, including Shamokin Mayor John Brown and city councilman Dan McGaw, likewise endorsed Meuser.[16] The campaign also organized a "Women for Meuser" initiative to broaden its outreach.[17]

The May 2018 Republican primary in the 9th district was a competitive multi-candidate race.[18][19] Meuser won the primary and went on to win the general election in November 2018, a district with a strong Republican lean. He took office on January 3, 2019.

During the campaign, Meuser signed the Americans for Tax Reform Taxpayer Protection Pledge, committing to oppose any net increase in taxes.[20] He also articulated positions on healthcare and business-related issues, drawing on his experience at Pride Mobility Products.[21]

U.S. House of Representatives

Meuser has represented Pennsylvania's 9th congressional district since January 3, 2019. The district is geographically one of the largest in Pennsylvania, covering parts of the Poconos, the Lebanon Valley, and portions of the Anthracite region and central Pennsylvania. As a Republican member, Meuser has aligned with conservative positions on fiscal policy, trade, immigration, and government regulation.

2020 Presidential Election Certification

On January 6, 2021, following the storming of the U.S. Capitol, Meuser was among the 147 Republican members of Congress who voted against the certification of the results of the 2020 United States presidential election. This vote, which sought to object to the Electoral College results in certain states, was a subject of significant national attention and debate.

Committee Assignments and Legislative Activities

In the 119th Congress, Meuser serves as chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee. In this role, he has led multiple hearings on a range of oversight topics. In June 2025, the subcommittee under Meuser's leadership held a hearing examining what it described as the CFPB's actions against certain industries during the tenure of former Director Rohit Chopra. In his opening statement, Meuser stated that "Congress must act to ensure the CFPB cannot be weaponized again."[22][23]

In September 2025, Meuser chaired a subcommittee hearing focused on fraud and scams, stating that the hearing represented "just the beginning of this committee's work on fraud and scams."[24]

In February 2026, Meuser led a hearing on oversight and enforcement of public housing authorities (PHAs), stating that "the Trump Administration and this committee have made oversight and enforcement of PHAs a priority."[25]

Trade Policy

Meuser has been a supporter of protectionist trade measures aligned with the "America First" framework. In February 2026, following a Supreme Court ruling on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff authority, Meuser issued a statement affirming his commitment to "America First trade policy."[26]

Federal Funding for the District

Meuser has worked to secure federal funding for infrastructure and community development projects in Pennsylvania's 9th district. In February 2026, he announced over $17 million in federal funding for twelve community projects across the district.[27] Among the specific projects funded was a $700,000 allocation for the Old Airport Road improvement project in his district.[28]

Immigration

In February 2026, Meuser addressed local concerns regarding the federal government's planned use of warehouse properties for ICE immigration detention purposes within his district. Meuser stated that he was working with federal authorities to address concerns raised by local communities, and suggested that such facilities could have a positive economic impact on the communities where they were located.[29]

Personal Life

Meuser resides in the 9th congressional district of Pennsylvania. He is married to Shelley Van Acker, and the couple have three children.[3] Before entering politics full-time, Meuser was a prominent member of the business community in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton metropolitan area through his long association with Pride Mobility Products Corporation. He continues to serve the company as a board member and consultant while holding office in Congress.[4]

Meuser and his family were reported to have been significant financial supporters of Republican political campaigns in Pennsylvania, including the gubernatorial campaign of Tom Corbett, who subsequently appointed Meuser as Secretary of Revenue.[10]

Recognition

Meuser was listed among influential figures in Pennsylvania politics by Politics magazine.[30] His work in the healthcare products industry, particularly his advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities and his testimony before Congress on disability care issues, brought him recognition within the durable medical equipment sector before his entry into elected politics.[5][4]

In Congress, Meuser's elevation to the chairmanship of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee in the 119th Congress represented a significant leadership role, giving him authority to convene hearings and direct investigations into financial regulatory matters, public housing oversight, and consumer protection enforcement.[31]
