Anthony Christian Wied (born May 3, 1976) is an American politician and businessman serving as the U.S. representative for Wisconsin's 8th congressional district since November 2024. A member of the Republican Party, Wied won a special election to succeed Mike Gallagher, who resigned from Congress earlier that year. Before entering politics, Wied built a career in the convenience store and fuel retail industry in the Green Bay area, operating the Dino Stop chain of gas stations and convenience stores. His entry into the congressional race was bolstered by an endorsement from Donald Trump, which proved instrumental in a competitive Republican primary. Wied defeated Democratic candidate Emily Voight in the special general election and was simultaneously elected to a full term representing the 8th District, which encompasses northeastern Wisconsin.[1] Since taking office, Wied has aligned closely with the policies of the Trump administration and has introduced legislation on issues including public safety, healthcare, and immigration enforcement.[2]
Early Life
Tony Wied was born Anthony Christian Wied on May 3, 1976, in Lincoln, Nebraska.[3] Details about his childhood and family background in Nebraska are limited in publicly available sources. At some point during his formative years or early adulthood, Wied relocated to the state of Wisconsin, where he would eventually establish both his business career and his family in the northeastern part of the state.
Wied settled in the Green Bay metropolitan area, a region characterized by its manufacturing base, agricultural heritage, and strong community ties. The area would become central to both his professional endeavors in the fuel and convenience store industry and his eventual political career representing the communities of northeastern Wisconsin.[4]
Education
Wied attended St. Norbert College, a private Catholic liberal arts college located in De Pere, Wisconsin, a suburb of Green Bay. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from the institution.[3] St. Norbert College, founded in 1898 by the Norbertine order, is one of the prominent higher education institutions in northeastern Wisconsin. Wied's business degree would serve as the academic foundation for his subsequent career in the convenience store and fuel retail industry.
Career
Business Career
Before entering politics, Wied established himself as a businessman in the Green Bay area, operating in the convenience store and fuel retail sector. He owned and operated the Dino Stop chain, a group of gas stations and convenience stores based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.[5]
In September 2022, it was reported that the Dino Stop chain was acquired by a Denver-based 7-Eleven operator. The sale of the Green Bay-based convenience store chain marked a transition point in Wied's professional life.[6] His experience as a business owner in the region became a central element of his political identity when he later sought public office, positioning himself as a private-sector figure with experience in job creation and business management in northeastern Wisconsin.
2024 Congressional Campaign
Background
The opportunity for Wied's entry into politics arose when incumbent U.S. Representative Mike Gallagher, a Republican who had represented Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District since 2017, announced his resignation from Congress. Gallagher's departure triggered a special election process to fill the vacancy for the remainder of his term, as well as a concurrent regular election for the full term beginning in January 2025.
Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District covers a large swath of northeastern Wisconsin, including the city of Green Bay, the Fox River Valley, and several rural counties extending to the Michigan border. The district has historically leaned Republican, making the GOP primary the decisive contest in most election cycles.
Trump Endorsement and Republican Primary
Wied's candidacy received a significant boost when former President Donald Trump endorsed him in the Republican primary race. The endorsement elevated Wied's profile among Republican voters in the district and became a defining feature of his campaign.[5][7]
The Republican primary field included several candidates vying for the nomination. Wied campaigned as a Trump-aligned conservative with a background in business, emphasizing his private-sector experience and his alignment with Trump's policy agenda. The primary election took place on August 13, 2024, and Wied emerged victorious, securing the Republican nomination after his opponent, Roger Roth, conceded the race.[8][9] Trump's endorsement was widely viewed as a decisive factor in the crowded primary contest.[10]
Special and General Elections
Following his primary victory, Wied faced Democratic candidate Emily Voight in both the special election to fill the remainder of Gallagher's term and the regular general election for the full two-year term. The 8th District's Republican lean gave Wied a structural advantage in the general election contests.
On November 5, 2024, Wied won both races, securing the special election to immediately succeed Gallagher and winning the general election for the full term beginning in January 2025.[11][12] Wied began serving in Congress on November 12, 2024, upon being sworn in to fill the vacancy left by Gallagher's resignation.
Tenure in Congress
Committee Assignments and Caucuses
Upon taking office, Wied was assigned to congressional committees and joined several caucuses. He became a member of the Congressional Western Caucus.[13] Information about his full committee assignments and caucus memberships is available through his official congressional website.[14]
Legislative Activity
In June 2025, Wied introduced legislation that would withhold federal funding from states and cities deemed "anarchist jurisdictions." The bill drew criticism from Democrats in his district, who characterized it as a measure that would "criminalize an entire city for the actions of a few people." The proposal reflected Wied's emphasis on law enforcement and public safety issues.[15]
In December 2025, Wied voted in favor of a Republican-sponsored healthcare bill in the House that proposed changes to address the rising cost of healthcare. The legislation did not include an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, a point of contention in the broader policy debate. Wied publicly discussed his reasoning for supporting the measure.[16]
Wied also issued a statement regarding the "American Relief Act of 2025," a piece of legislation that moved through the House during his term.[17]
Constituent Engagement
Wied held call-in town hall events to engage with constituents in the 8th District. During his second such town hall, held in January 2026, he addressed issues including the cost of living, immigration, and other policy areas. During the event, Wied expressed support for Trump administration policies and discussed his legislative priorities.[18]
Political Positions and Public Statements
Wied has maintained close alignment with the Republican Party and the Trump administration throughout his time in Congress. In September 2025, he formally endorsed fellow Wisconsin Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany in Tiffany's bid for the Wisconsin governorship.[19]
In September 2025, following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, Wied published an opinion piece in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel calling for a reduction in political tensions. He wrote that "spirited policy debates should end with handshakes, not hatred," urging Americans to engage in constructive political discourse.[20]
In October 2025, Wied spoke alongside Green Bay alderpersons after "Wanted" signs were posted in the city of Green Bay, an incident that prompted concern from local officials.[21]
Immigration enforcement has been a prominent issue during Wied's tenure. In early 2026, the Wisconsin Democratic Party criticized Wied for declining to comment on the case of a Green Bay high school graduate who was involved in an ICE enforcement incident. In response, Wied's office attributed violence to what it characterized as Democrats' "constant demonization of our ICE officers and their inflammatory rhetoric."[22]
2026 Re-election Campaign
In November 2025, Donald Trump announced his "Complete and Total Endorsement" of Wied for re-election in 2026, providing early support for the congressman's bid to retain his seat in the 8th District.[23]
Personal Life
Tony Wied resides in the Green Bay area of northeastern Wisconsin with his wife, Angela Wied. The couple has four children.[3] Wied's personal roots in the Green Bay community were established through both his family life and his years operating the Dino Stop convenience store chain in the region before entering politics.
Wied is a graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, maintaining a connection to the local academic community. His campaign and public profile have emphasized his identity as a Green Bay-area businessman and family man.[5]
