Before joining Discovery Communications, Zaslav spent approximately 17 years at NBCUniversal, where he rose through the ranks of the company's cable division. During his time at NBC, Zaslav was instrumental in the development and launch of two major cable news channels: CNBC, the business news network, and MSNBC, the joint venture between NBC and Microsoft that launched in 1996. His work at NBC positioned him as a key figure in the cable television landscape, and his expertise in building and distributing cable networks attracted the attention of Discovery Communications' board of directors.
Before joining Discovery, Zaslav spent a significant portion of his career at NBCUniversal, where he rose through the ranks of the company's cable division. During his time at NBC, Zaslav was involved in the development and launch of two major cable news channels: CNBC, the business and financial news network, and MSNBC, the general news and political commentary channel. His work in cable distribution and network development at NBC established his reputation as a skilled operator in the rapidly growing cable television industry.

The Washington Post reported in November 2006 that Zaslav's appointment as Discovery's new CEO was driven in part by his deep relationships with cable operators and his demonstrated ability to launch new programming services.
Zaslav's expertise at NBC centered on cable distribution — the business of negotiating carriage agreements with cable operators and satellite providers to ensure that networks reached the maximum number of households. This distribution-focused background would become a defining feature of his leadership style, emphasizing the commercial and operational aspects of media companies.

Discovery Communications: Early Tenure (2006–2012)
Discovery Communications (2006–2022)
Zaslav was named president and CEO of Discovery Communications in late 2006, succeeding previous leadership at a time when the company was primarily known for its flagship Discovery Channel and a portfolio of nonfiction cable networks. His mandate was to expand the company's brand portfolio, grow its international footprint, and prepare it for the public markets.
Appointment and Early Tenure
In 2008, Discovery Communications completed its initial public offering, becoming a publicly traded company. The IPO was a milestone for the company and marked the beginning of a period of aggressive growth under Zaslav's leadership.
In late 2006, David Zaslav was named president and CEO of Discovery Communications, the parent company of the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, and other factual entertainment networks. The appointment was announced as Discovery sought a leader who could expand the company's reach and prepare it for its next phase of growth. Zaslav arrived at Discovery with a clear mandate to grow the business, and he wasted little time in pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy.

Under Zaslav, Discovery pursued a strategy of launching new networks and rebranding existing ones to capture specific demographics. In one notable move, Discovery launched the Velocity channel, a network aimed at affluent male viewers with programming centered on automobiles, luxury goods, and adventure. The company also rebranded its eco-themed channel, Planet Green, moving it away from its original environmental focus in 2010 as the network struggled to find a broader audience.
IPO and Expansion
During this period, Zaslav articulated a consistent growth plan for Discovery that focused on international expansion and the development of new content verticals. MediaPost reported on his strategy of leveraging Discovery's strong brand identity in nonfiction and factual programming to enter new markets around the world.
One of Zaslav's first major accomplishments at Discovery was guiding the company through its initial public offering in 2008. The IPO gave Discovery access to public capital markets and set the stage for a period of rapid expansion both domestically and internationally.

Zaslav also pushed Discovery into digital education. In 2012, The New York Times reported that Discovery invested in digital textbooks, seeking new avenues of growth beyond traditional television advertising. This initiative reflected Zaslav's interest in extending Discovery's content expertise into adjacent markets, though the digital education business would remain a relatively small part of the company's overall portfolio.
Under Zaslav's leadership, Discovery pursued a strategy of launching new networks and rebranding existing ones to target specific audience demographics. The company launched the Velocity channel, aimed at affluent male viewers interested in automobiles and lifestyle content. Discovery also revamped its Planet Green network, moving it away from its original environmental programming focus to broaden its appeal.

Expansion and the Scripps Networks Acquisition (2012–2021)
Zaslav also pushed Discovery into new business areas beyond traditional cable television. In 2012, the company made an investment in digital textbooks, reflecting a belief that Discovery's educational content could be leveraged in new formats and markets.

The second half of Zaslav's tenure at Discovery was defined by a major push into acquisitions. The company expanded its domestic and international channel portfolio, and Zaslav positioned Discovery as a consolidator in an increasingly fragmented cable television landscape.
The company also expanded its advertising business, seeking to grow revenue beyond traditional 30-second commercial spots. A 2010 report in The New York Times detailed Discovery's efforts to develop new forms of advertising and branded content partnerships across its portfolio of networks.

The most significant deal during this period was Discovery's acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive in 2018. The purchase, which closed in March 2018, brought networks such as HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, and DIY Network under the Discovery umbrella, creating what The Hollywood Reporter described as a "nonscripted content giant." The deal significantly expanded Discovery's reach in the domestic cable market, giving the combined company a portfolio of channels with particular strength among female and home-oriented demographics.
International Growth
Following the Scripps acquisition, Zaslav presided over the integration of the two companies and the development of new programming strategies. In 2018, Discovery also highlighted its Motor Trend network as part of its upfront presentations, signaling continued investment in enthusiast-focused content.
A central component of Zaslav's strategy at Discovery was international expansion. The company's portfolio of factual and unscripted programming — covering nature, science, travel, and lifestyle subjects — had a natural advantage in global markets because much of the content required limited localization compared to scripted entertainment. Under Zaslav, Discovery grew its international footprint significantly, establishing operations in markets across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and other regions.

Throughout this period, Discovery also invested in its advertising sales infrastructure. A 2010 New York Times article documented the company's efforts to boost its advertising revenue through new sales strategies and data-driven targeting, part of a broader industry trend toward more sophisticated ad products in cable television.
The Washington Post reported in 2007 on Zaslav's early international ambitions for Discovery, noting his plans to expand the company's global distribution. The Washington Post also covered Zaslav's broader strategic direction in 2008, highlighting his plans to grow Discovery's business in the run-up to and following the IPO.

A Washington Post profile from 2007, early in Zaslav's Discovery tenure, noted his approach to management and his efforts to revitalize the company's culture and programming lineup. A 2010 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article further documented Zaslav's influence on Discovery's direction during this period of expansion.
Scripps Networks Acquisition
WarnerMedia Merger and Warner Bros. Discovery (2021–present)
In 2018, Discovery completed its acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, the parent company of HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, and other lifestyle-oriented cable channels, in a deal valued at approximately $14.6 billion. The acquisition, which Zaslav championed, significantly expanded Discovery's portfolio and made it one of the largest providers of unscripted and lifestyle programming in the United States.

In May 2021, AT&T announced that it would spin off its WarnerMedia division and combine it with Discovery, Inc. to create a new standalone media company. The deal, structured as a Reverse Morris Trust transaction, was one of the largest media mergers in history. The merger closed in April 2022, and the combined entity was named Warner Bros. Discovery. Zaslav was named CEO and president of the new company.
The merger brought together networks like Discovery Channel and TLC with HGTV and Food Network under one corporate umbrella. Zaslav positioned the combined company as the leading destination for real-life entertainment, and the integration of Scripps allowed Discovery to offer advertisers a broader portfolio of targeted audiences. As part of the expanded company's strategy, Discovery also launched the Motor Trend on-demand streaming service, building on its acquisition of the Motor Trend brand.

The creation of Warner Bros. Discovery placed Zaslav at the helm of a company with a vastly expanded portfolio that included the Warner Bros. film and television studio, HBO, CNN, TNT, TBS, the DC superhero franchise, and the former Discovery networks. The combined company became one of the largest media conglomerates in the world, competing directly with The Walt Disney Company, Netflix, and NBCUniversal.
Merger with WarnerMedia
Zaslav's leadership of WBD has been marked by significant cost-cutting measures, restructuring, and strategic pivots that have generated both industry attention and controversy. The Hollywood Reporter, in a December 2025 retrospective, examined Zaslav's standing among Hollywood's executives, noting the polarizing nature of his tenure and the open question of his legacy.
In May 2021, AT&T announced that it would spin off WarnerMedia and merge it with Discovery, Inc. to create a new standalone media company. The deal, structured as a Reverse Morris Trust transaction, was designed to combine WarnerMedia's portfolio — which included Warner Bros. studios, HBO, CNN, TNT, TBS, and the DC Extended Universe — with Discovery's cable networks.

Merger Negotiations (2025–2026)
The merger closed in April 2022, and the resulting company was named Warner Bros. Discovery. Zaslav was named CEO and president of the combined entity, assuming control of one of the largest media companies in the world with operations spanning film production, television networks, streaming services, and global content distribution.

By late 2025 and into early 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery became the subject of intense merger speculation and formal deal negotiations. Reports indicated that both Netflix and Paramount Skydance, led by David Ellison, were pursuing acquisition or merger arrangements with WBD.
Warner Bros. Discovery (2022–present)
In February 2026, WBD's board of directors unanimously recommended that shareholders vote in favor of a proposed merger with Netflix at a special meeting scheduled for March 20, 2026. At the same time, the company disclosed that Netflix had granted a seven-day waiver permitting WBD to engage in discussions with Paramount Skydance regarding deficiencies in its amended offer.

Puck reported that some on Wall Street were considering whether Netflix's secondary motive in pursuing WBD was to act as an anti-competitive weapon against Paramount, complicating the strategic calculus for all parties involved.
Potential Sale and Merger Negotiations (2025–2026)
In January 2026, after Paramount Skydance's eighth takeover bid was rejected by WBD, Zaslav sent an internal memo to employees addressing the situation, a communication that was subsequently obtained and published by Business Insider.
By late 2025 and into 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery became the subject of major acquisition discussions involving some of the largest companies in the media and technology industries. Reports indicated that both Netflix and Paramount Skydance (led by David Ellison) were pursuing deals to acquire WBD.

As of late February 2026, the outcome of the merger process remained unresolved, with the March 20 shareholder meeting expected to be a pivotal moment in determining the future of the company and Zaslav's role within it.
In February 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery's board of directors set a special shareholder meeting date of March 20, 2026, and unanimously recommended that shareholders vote in favor of a merger with Netflix. Throughout his career, Zaslav has received attention from various media and industry publications. The Hollywood Reporter included him in its assessment of Hollywood's most notable moguls in December 2025, reflecting on the scale of his influence and the debates surrounding his leadership decisions at Warner Bros. Discovery. MoneyInc profiled Zaslav as part of its coverage of notable business executives, highlighting aspects of his career and personal background.
Throughout his career, Zaslav has been recognized as one of the most prominent executives in the American media industry. His compensation at Discovery and later at Warner Bros. Discovery has been among the highest in the sector, a fact that has drawn attention from both industry analysts and media commentators. His role in shaping the cable television landscape through the launch of CNBC and MSNBC, and his subsequent transformation of Discovery from a single-channel company into a global media conglomerate, have been noted in industry profiles.

David Zaslav's legacy in the American media industry is shaped by several distinct achievements and ongoing debates. His nearly two-decade tenure at Discovery Communications transformed what was a mid-sized cable network operator into one of the world's largest nonfiction media companies, culminating in the Scripps Networks acquisition that created a dominant portfolio of lifestyle and factual entertainment brands. His role in bringing Discovery to the public markets through its 2008 IPO was a defining moment for the company.
David Zaslav's legacy in the American media industry remains a subject of active debate as of 2026. The Hollywood Reporter published an assessment in December 2025 examining where Zaslav ranks "among Hollywood's most controversial moguls," noting the polarizing nature of his tenure at Warner Bros. Discovery and suggesting that the outcome of the company's potential sale would be a defining factor in how his leadership is ultimately judged.

The creation of Warner Bros. Discovery through the 2022 merger with WarnerMedia represented the most consequential chapter of Zaslav's career. The deal gave him stewardship over one of Hollywood's most storied studios, premium brands like HBO and CNN, and a vast library of intellectual property. However, his tenure at WBD has also been defined by aggressive cost-cutting, content write-offs, and restructuring that drew criticism from segments of the creative community and industry observers. The Hollywood Reporter noted in its 2025 assessment that the question of Zaslav's legacy remained open, particularly as the company's future ownership was in flux due to the ongoing merger negotiations with Netflix and Paramount Skydance.
His career can be divided into several distinct chapters. At NBCUniversal, he contributed to the development of cable news as a major programming format through his involvement with CNBC and MSNBC. At Discovery, he transformed a mid-sized cable programmer into a global media enterprise, overseeing its IPO, international expansion, the acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, and ultimately the merger with WarnerMedia. The creation of Warner Bros. Discovery brought together one of Hollywood's oldest studios with one of its most successful non-fiction programming companies.

His earlier contributions at NBCUniversal — particularly his involvement in the launches of CNBC and MSNBC — established him as a builder of cable networks during a transformative era in American television. Across his career, Zaslav's trajectory from cable executive to the leader of a major entertainment conglomerate reflects the broader consolidation and transformation of the American media landscape in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
However, his tenure at the helm of Warner Bros. Discovery has also been marked by controversy. The company's aggressive cost-cutting measures, including significant layoffs and the cancellation of completed projects, drew criticism from creative professionals and labor organizations. The company's stock price declined significantly in the years following the merger, raising questions about the strategic rationale of the WarnerMedia combination. The ongoing negotiations over a potential sale of the company in 2025–2026 have added further uncertainty about the long-term trajectory of the enterprise Zaslav built.

Regardless of the outcome of the current deal negotiations, Zaslav's impact on the structure of the American media industry over the past two decades is substantial. His career arc — from cable distribution executive to head of a major media conglomerate now at the center of a potential transformative acquisition — reflects the broader consolidation and transformation of the entertainment industry during the transition from traditional television to the streaming era.

David Zaslav (born January 15, 1960) is an American media executive who serves as the chief executive officer and president of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), one of the largest media and entertainment companies in the world. His career in the cable television and media industries spans more than three decades, beginning with formative years at NBCUniversal where he played a role in the development and launch of the cable news channels CNBC and MSNBC. In 2006, Zaslav was appointed president and CEO of Discovery Communications (later Discovery, Inc.), guiding the company through its initial public offering in 2008, a series of major acquisitions including Scripps Networks Interactive in 2018, and ultimately the landmark merger with WarnerMedia in April 2022 that created Warner Bros. Discovery. As head of WBD, Zaslav oversees a portfolio that includes the Warner Bros. film and television studios, HBO, CNN, the Discovery family of channels, and the streaming service Max. His tenure has been marked by aggressive cost-cutting, corporate restructuring, and strategic deal-making that has drawn both praise from investors and criticism from segments of the entertainment industry. As of early 2026, Zaslav remains at the center of major industry negotiations, with Warner Bros. Discovery weighing acquisition offers from both Netflix and Paramount Skydance.[1]

Early Life

David Zaslav was born on January 15, 1960, in New York City.[2] He grew up in the New York metropolitan area. Details about his parents and childhood upbringing remain limited in public records, though Zaslav has identified with his Jewish heritage throughout his public life. He participated in the 70th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in January 2015, traveling to Poland alongside filmmaker Steven Spielberg and other prominent figures from the entertainment and Jewish communities.[3][4] The event was also covered by industry trade publications, which noted Zaslav's involvement alongside other media leaders in supporting Holocaust remembrance efforts.[5][6]

Zaslav has also been involved in philanthropic efforts related to medical research. He has supported The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), an organization focused on frontotemporal dementia research and awareness.[7]

Education

Zaslav attended Binghamton University, a public research university in the State University of New York system, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.[2] He subsequently enrolled at Boston University School of Law, earning his Juris Doctor degree. His legal training would prove instrumental in his early career in the cable television industry, where he worked on regulatory and business development matters before transitioning into executive management roles.[2]

Career

NBCUniversal

Before joining Discovery, Zaslav spent a significant portion of his career at NBCUniversal, where he rose through the ranks of the company's cable division. During his time at NBC, Zaslav was involved in the development and launch of two major cable news channels: CNBC, the business and financial news network, and MSNBC, the general news and political commentary channel. His work in cable distribution and network development at NBC established his reputation as a skilled operator in the rapidly growing cable television industry.[8]

Zaslav's expertise at NBC centered on cable distribution — the business of negotiating carriage agreements with cable operators and satellite providers to ensure that networks reached the maximum number of households. This distribution-focused background would become a defining feature of his leadership style, emphasizing the commercial and operational aspects of media companies.[8]

Discovery Communications (2006–2022)

Appointment and Early Tenure

In late 2006, David Zaslav was named president and CEO of Discovery Communications, the parent company of the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, and other factual entertainment networks. The appointment was announced as Discovery sought a leader who could expand the company's reach and prepare it for its next phase of growth.[8] Zaslav arrived at Discovery with a clear mandate to grow the business, and he wasted little time in pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy.[9]

IPO and Expansion

One of Zaslav's first major accomplishments at Discovery was guiding the company through its initial public offering in 2008.[10] The IPO gave Discovery access to public capital markets and set the stage for a period of rapid expansion both domestically and internationally.

Under Zaslav's leadership, Discovery pursued a strategy of launching new networks and rebranding existing ones to target specific audience demographics. The company launched the Velocity channel, aimed at affluent male viewers interested in automobiles and lifestyle content.[11] Discovery also revamped its Planet Green network, moving it away from its original environmental programming focus to broaden its appeal.[12]

Zaslav also pushed Discovery into new business areas beyond traditional cable television. In 2012, the company made an investment in digital textbooks, reflecting a belief that Discovery's educational content could be leveraged in new formats and markets.[13]

The company also expanded its advertising business, seeking to grow revenue beyond traditional 30-second commercial spots. A 2010 report in The New York Times detailed Discovery's efforts to develop new forms of advertising and branded content partnerships across its portfolio of networks.[14]

International Growth

A central component of Zaslav's strategy at Discovery was international expansion. The company's portfolio of factual and unscripted programming — covering nature, science, travel, and lifestyle subjects — had a natural advantage in global markets because much of the content required limited localization compared to scripted entertainment. Under Zaslav, Discovery grew its international footprint significantly, establishing operations in markets across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and other regions.[2]

The Washington Post reported in 2007 on Zaslav's early international ambitions for Discovery, noting his plans to expand the company's global distribution.[15] The Washington Post also covered Zaslav's broader strategic direction in 2008, highlighting his plans to grow Discovery's business in the run-up to and following the IPO.[16]

Scripps Networks Acquisition

In 2018, Discovery completed its acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, the parent company of HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, and other lifestyle-oriented cable channels, in a deal valued at approximately $14.6 billion. The acquisition, which Zaslav championed, significantly expanded Discovery's portfolio and made it one of the largest providers of unscripted and lifestyle programming in the United States.[17]

As part of the expanded company's strategy, Discovery also launched the Motor Trend on-demand streaming service, building on its acquisition of the Motor Trend brand.[18]

Merger with WarnerMedia

In May 2021, AT&T announced that it would spin off WarnerMedia and merge it with Discovery, Inc. to create a new standalone media company. The deal, structured as a Reverse Morris Trust transaction, was designed to combine WarnerMedia's portfolio — which included Warner Bros. studios, HBO, CNN, TNT, TBS, and the DC Extended Universe — with Discovery's cable networks.[19]

The merger closed in April 2022, and the resulting company was named Warner Bros. Discovery. Zaslav was named CEO and president of the combined entity, assuming control of one of the largest media companies in the world with operations spanning film production, television networks, streaming services, and global content distribution.

Warner Bros. Discovery (2022–present)

Restructuring and Cost-Cutting

Upon taking the helm of Warner Bros. Discovery, Zaslav embarked on a significant restructuring effort. The company faced substantial debt from the merger and Zaslav prioritized reducing costs and streamlining operations. His approach included layoffs across the organization, the cancellation of completed film and television projects (most notably the shelving of the nearly completed Batgirl film in 2022), and the consolidation of the company's streaming platforms into a single service called Max.

These measures generated significant controversy within the entertainment industry. Zaslav's leadership style and decision-making drew scrutiny from industry observers and media commentators. The Hollywood Reporter published an analysis in December 2025 examining Zaslav's place among Hollywood's most controversial executives, noting that "there's a good chance that his reign in entertainment is about to come to a close when Warner Bros. sells" and that "the only question is his legacy."[20]

Potential Sale and Merger Negotiations (2025–2026)

By late 2025 and into 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery became the subject of major acquisition discussions involving some of the largest companies in the media and technology industries. Reports indicated that both Netflix and Paramount Skydance (led by David Ellison) were pursuing deals to acquire WBD.

In February 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery's board of directors set a special shareholder meeting date of March 20, 2026, and unanimously recommended that shareholders vote in favor of a merger with Netflix. At the same time, the company disclosed that Netflix had granted a seven-day waiver permitting WBD to engage with Paramount Skydance regarding what the company described as "deficiencies and open items" in an amended offer from Paramount.[21]

Reports from Deadline in February 2026 indicated that Paramount had sweetened its offer for Warner Bros. Discovery above $30 per share.[22] WBD shares showed resilience during a broader market downturn caused by tariff and trade uncertainty, as investors awaited developments in the competing bids.[23]

The New York Post reported that even as Zaslav appeared to be pursuing a mega-deal with Netflix, sources indicated that his strategy involved allowing Paramount and Netflix to compete against each other, potentially to maximize value for WBD shareholders.[24] Puck reported on what it termed "the Netflix killer non-acquisition theory," suggesting that some on Wall Street wondered whether Netflix's secondary motive in the deal discussions was to act as an anti-competitive weapon, potentially disrupting Paramount's bid.[25]

Meanwhile, Business Insider published the text of a memo Zaslav sent to WBD employees after the company rejected Paramount Skydance's takeover bid for what was reported to be the eighth time, underscoring the protracted nature of the negotiations.[26]

The outcome of these negotiations remains pending as of February 2026 and represents one of the most significant potential transactions in the history of the American media industry.

Personal Life

David Zaslav is married to Pam Zaslav. The couple has three children.[2] The family has maintained a relatively private profile compared to some other media industry executives, though Zaslav's compensation packages and lifestyle have been subjects of media coverage.

Zaslav has been involved in a number of philanthropic and civic activities. He participated in the 70th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz in January 2015, traveling to Poland alongside Steven Spielberg and other entertainment industry figures to honor the memory of Holocaust victims.[27] He has also supported The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), contributing to awareness and research efforts related to frontotemporal dementia.[28]

Recognition

In October 2025, Zaslav was honored with the Humanitarian Award at the Simon Wiesenthal Center's annual gala dinner. The event was attended by leaders from the entertainment, philanthropy, and Jewish communities and raised a record $4.3 million to support the Wiesenthal Center's programs and mission.[29]

Throughout his career, Zaslav has been recognized as one of the most prominent executives in the American media industry. His compensation at Discovery and later at Warner Bros. Discovery has been among the highest in the sector, a fact that has drawn attention from both industry analysts and media commentators. His role in shaping the cable television landscape through the launch of CNBC and MSNBC, and his subsequent transformation of Discovery from a single-channel company into a global media conglomerate, have been noted in industry profiles.[30]

Legacy

David Zaslav's legacy in the American media industry remains a subject of active debate as of 2026. The Hollywood Reporter published an assessment in December 2025 examining where Zaslav ranks "among Hollywood's most controversial moguls," noting the polarizing nature of his tenure at Warner Bros. Discovery and suggesting that the outcome of the company's potential sale would be a defining factor in how his leadership is ultimately judged.[31]
