Parag Agrawal (born 21 May 1984) is an Indian-American software engineer, technology executive, and entrepreneur who served as the chief executive officer of Twitter, Inc. from November 2021 to October 2022. Born in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India, Agrawal rose through the ranks at Twitter over the course of a decade, joining the company as an engineer in 2011 and ascending to the role of chief technology officer in 2017 before being named CEO by the board of directors upon Jack Dorsey's resignation.[1] His tenure as CEO was marked by significant internal restructuring efforts and the protracted and contentious acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, which concluded in October 2022 with Agrawal's departure from the company.[2] Following his exit from Twitter, Agrawal founded Parallel Web Systems, an artificial intelligence startup focused on building search infrastructure for AI agents, which raised $100 million in Series A funding in November 2025 at a valuation of $740 million.[3]

Early Life

Parag Agrawal was born on 21 May 1984 in Ajmer, a city in the state of Rajasthan, India.[4] His family later relocated to Mumbai due to his father's employment.[4] Agrawal showed early academic aptitude, particularly in the sciences. As a student, he was recognized for his focus and discipline. His former teachers at school described him as a "bright student" who was "well-organized."[5]

Agrawal distinguished himself in competitive academic settings at an early age. He represented India at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), where he won a gold medal, demonstrating exceptional ability in physics at the international level.[6][7] This achievement placed him among an elite group of young Indian scientists and helped establish his credentials as a student of exceptional caliber in science and engineering.

Agrawal's early academic record was characterized by the traits his teachers later recalled: a focused approach to study, an innovative mindset, and consistent high performance. According to the Indian Express, he was described by educators as "a typical topper" who "had focus and innovation."[8] His success in the Physics Olympiad and his subsequent admission to one of India's most competitive engineering institutions reflected the rigor of his early education and preparation.

Education

Agrawal pursued his undergraduate education at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), one of India's most selective engineering institutions, where he earned a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in computer science and engineering.[9] He gained admission to IIT Bombay through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). In a later interview, Agrawal reflected on his JEE experience, noting that he regretted wasting time tying supplements during the examination.[10]

After completing his undergraduate studies, Agrawal moved to the United States to pursue graduate education at Stanford University, where he earned both a Master of Science (MS) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science.[11][12] His doctoral research at Stanford focused on areas relevant to large-scale data systems and computing, expertise that would prove directly applicable to his later career at Twitter.[12]

Career

Early Career at Twitter (2011–2017)

Agrawal joined Twitter as a software engineer in 2011, shortly after completing his doctoral studies at Stanford University.[13] Over the next several years, he worked on various technical projects at the company, building expertise in the platform's underlying infrastructure and technology systems. His trajectory at Twitter was notable for its steady progression through increasingly senior engineering and technical leadership roles.

During his initial years at Twitter, Agrawal worked on advertising technology and the company's data and machine learning infrastructure. His technical contributions earned him recognition within the company, and he was eventually promoted to the role of "Distinguished Engineer," one of the highest individual contributor designations in Twitter's engineering hierarchy.[14]

Chief Technology Officer (2017–2021)

In October 2017, Twitter appointed Agrawal as its chief technology officer (CTO), elevating him from his Distinguished Engineer role to the company's top technical position.[14] As CTO, Agrawal oversaw Twitter's technical strategy, including its approach to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and the platform's underlying infrastructure. He played a central role in shaping the company's technical direction during a period when social media platforms were grappling with challenges related to content moderation, misinformation, and platform integrity.

During his time as CTO, Agrawal was involved in Twitter's efforts to develop and implement machine learning tools for content recommendation and for identifying harmful content on the platform. He also led initiatives related to decentralized social media technology, including Twitter's investment in Bluesky, a project aimed at developing an open and decentralized standard for social media.[11]

Agrawal's role as CTO positioned him as one of the most senior executives at the company and brought him into close working relationships with CEO Jack Dorsey and other members of Twitter's leadership team. His deep institutional knowledge and technical expertise made him a natural candidate for a larger leadership role within the organization.

CEO of Twitter (2021–2022)

On 29 November 2021, Twitter announced that co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey was stepping down from his role and that the company's board of directors had unanimously appointed Agrawal as his successor.[1][15] In announcing the transition, Dorsey expressed his confidence in Agrawal, describing him as the right person to lead the company forward. Agrawal also joined Twitter's board of directors upon assuming the CEO role.[1]

The appointment drew significant media attention, both for Agrawal's relative obscurity compared to the high-profile Dorsey and for his status as an Indian-born technology executive leading a major American technology company.[16][17] The New York Times noted that Agrawal, despite having spent a decade at Twitter, was relatively unknown outside the company and faced significant challenges including slowing user growth, increased regulatory scrutiny, and ongoing debates about content moderation policies.[16]

Agrawal's tenure as CEO was soon dominated by the acquisition bid from Elon Musk. In April 2022, Musk made an unsolicited offer to acquire Twitter, initiating a months-long saga that involved shifting terms, legal disputes, and intense public scrutiny. Agrawal was placed in the position of navigating a complex corporate transaction while also managing the day-to-day operations of the company during a period of considerable uncertainty.

During this period, Agrawal undertook internal restructuring efforts, including layoffs and reorganization of the company's leadership. He sought to streamline Twitter's operations and refocus the company's priorities. However, the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the Musk acquisition created significant challenges for employee morale and strategic planning.

On 27 October 2022, Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter for approximately $44 billion. Upon closing the deal, Musk immediately dismissed several top executives, including Agrawal.[2] Agrawal's departure from Twitter, along with other senior executives including Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, was reported by multiple news outlets as occurring on the day the acquisition was finalized.[2]

The circumstances of Agrawal's termination subsequently became the subject of legal action. Agrawal and three other former Twitter executives filed a lawsuit seeking approximately $128 million in severance pay that they argued was owed to them under the terms of their employment agreements and the acquisition deal.[18] In October 2025, it was reported that X Corp (the successor company to Twitter) and Musk reached a settlement in the lawsuit, resolving the dispute.[18] The specific terms of the settlement were not publicly disclosed.

Parallel Web Systems (2024–present)

Following his departure from Twitter, Agrawal spent a period away from the public spotlight before reemerging in Silicon Valley with a new venture. He founded Parallel Web Systems, a startup focused on building specialized search infrastructure for artificial intelligence agents.[19]

In August 2025, Parallel Web Systems publicly launched its research platform for AI applications, positioning itself in the growing market for AI infrastructure and tooling.[20] The company's initial fundraising included a $30 million round, with the company developing what was described as a "Deep Research API" aimed at enabling AI systems to conduct sophisticated web research.[19]

In November 2025, Agrawal announced at the Cerebral Valley AI Summit that Parallel Web Systems had raised $100 million in Series A funding.[3] The funding round valued the company at $740 million and was co-led by Kleiner Perkins and Index Ventures.[21][22]

The startup's stated mission is to build infrastructure that allows AI agents to access and use information from the web more effectively than existing solutions. According to coverage in AI Magazine, Parallel Web Systems aims to tackle challenges related to data access and model performance for AI agents conducting web-based research.[23] Business Chief reported that the company's technology was designed to "outperform both humans and" existing AI systems in certain web research tasks.[24]

The rapid growth in funding for Parallel Web Systems — from $30 million to $100 million within a few months — reflected strong investor interest in AI infrastructure companies during the mid-2020s and in Agrawal's technical background and leadership experience.

Personal Life

Agrawal is married to Vineeta Agarwala, and the couple has two children.[25] Agrawal named one of his sons Ansh, a name that was reported to carry personal significance for the family.[25]

Agrawal's parents maintained ties to his hometown of Ajmer even after the family's relocation to Mumbai.[4] Following his appointment as Twitter CEO in November 2021, his background and family story received considerable attention in Indian media, with multiple outlets profiling his journey from Ajmer to Silicon Valley.[26][27]

Agrawal resides in the United States, where he has been based since moving to the country for graduate school at Stanford University.[4]

Recognition

Agrawal's appointment as CEO of Twitter in November 2021 drew widespread media coverage in both the United States and India. Multiple publications profiled his career trajectory, noting the significance of an Indian-born engineer leading one of the world's most prominent social media companies.[16][17][28]

CNBC highlighted the rarity of Agrawal's career trajectory, noting that he had gone "from Twitter engineer to CEO in just 10 years," a rapid ascent through the corporate hierarchy of a major technology company.[13] India Today and other Indian media outlets profiled Agrawal as part of a broader narrative of Indian-origin executives assuming leadership positions at major global technology companies, a cohort that includes figures such as Sundar Pichai of Alphabet Inc. and Satya Nadella of Microsoft.[9]

Agrawal's gold medal at the International Physics Olympiad during his student years was also cited as evidence of his early academic distinction.[6] His educational background at IIT Bombay and Stanford University was frequently referenced in media profiles as emblematic of a pipeline of Indian engineering talent into Silicon Valley leadership roles.[8][11]

Following the launch of Parallel Web Systems, Agrawal received renewed attention from the technology press, with Yahoo Finance, SiliconANGLE, and other outlets covering his reemergence in the AI startup ecosystem.[19][22]

Legacy

Agrawal's career has intersected with several significant developments in the technology industry. His decade-long tenure at Twitter, culminating in the CEO role, placed him at the center of one of the most scrutinized corporate acquisitions in recent history. The Musk acquisition of Twitter and its aftermath — including the rebranding of the company to X, significant workforce reductions, and changes to platform policies — reshaped the social media landscape and became a subject of extensive public debate.

As one of the final leaders of Twitter before the Musk acquisition, Agrawal's tenure represents a transitional chapter in the company's history. His appointment was the culmination of a path from individual engineering contributor to corporate leader, a trajectory that CNBC described as occurring within a remarkably compressed timeframe of approximately ten years.[13]

Agrawal's subsequent pivot to founding Parallel Web Systems in the AI sector reflects broader trends in Silicon Valley, where experienced technology executives have increasingly directed their attention and resources toward artificial intelligence. The company's rapid accumulation of significant venture capital funding — reaching a $740 million valuation within its early stages — indicated strong investor confidence in Agrawal's technical leadership and the commercial potential of AI infrastructure.[3][21]

His career also fits within the broader pattern of Indian-born and Indian-American executives ascending to leadership positions at major American technology companies, a phenomenon that has drawn commentary from media and business analysts in both countries.[9][27]
