The University of Arizona is the state's land-grant university, founded in Tucson in 1885, and this roster is almost entirely a record of Arizona politics. Members of Congress from the state's districts, a mayor of Tucson, a state senator and the Republican presidential nominee of 1964 all took degrees there. A short entertainment strand breaks the pattern completely: a screen actor and comedian, and a film director whose name is attached to a run of American teen comedies.
Background
The University of Arizona predates Arizona statehood by twenty-seven years. It sits in Tucson, in Pima County, and functions as the flagship public research university for the southern half of the state, distinct from Arizona State University in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Because its intake is so heavily in-state, the roster here reads as a map of Arizona public life rather than of any profession. That is the opposite of the pattern in the large private-university categories on this wiki, where members disperse nationally.
Arizona politics
Barry Goldwater represented Arizona in the United States Senate from 1953 to 1965 and again from 1969 to 1987, and was the Republican presidential nominee in 1964. He is the anchor of this roster and the reason its political character is so pronounced.
The modern congressional delegation follows him. Raúl Grijalva served in the House of Representatives from Arizona for more than two decades, from 2003 until his death in 2025. Ann Kirkpatrick served across three separate stints spanning more than a decade. Andy Biggs and Juan Ciscomani hold seats currently, as does Eli Crane, a former Navy SEAL and businessman. Mark Finchem has sat in the Arizona Senate since January 2025. Regina Romero has been Mayor of Tucson since December 2019.
The political membership also travels. Janice McGeachin was Lieutenant Governor of Idaho from 2019 to 2023.
The exceptions
A small entertainment strand sits apart from the political roster around it. Kristen Wiig developed her work with the Los Angeles troupe The Groundlings before seven seasons on Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2012. John Hughes wrote and directed Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off in the mid-1980s, working mostly in and around Chicago. Brad William Henke played as a defensive lineman in the NFL and the Arena Football League before turning to acting, and is best known as Corrections Officer Desi Piscatella on Orange Is the New Black.
The most recent addition is different again. Adam Ezra Levin attended the university from 1997 to 2001 and founded and sold an education technology company shortly after graduating, going on to a career in private equity and investing.
